Course Information
Description Exploration of group counseling skills, techniques, stages of group development, and confidentiality and ethics.
Prerequisites DAAC 1317 and DAAC 1311
Learning Outcomes COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Define the basic group counseling skills necessary to the development of an effective helping     relationship with clients.
2. Explain the basic group counseling skills necessary to the development of an effective helping     relationship with clients.
3. Define the various methods of communication in group counseling
4. Identify barriers to communication in treatment.
Core Objectives * Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.
* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.
* Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.
* Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view.
* Social Responsibility: Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national and/or global communities.
* Personal Responsibility: Students will demonstrate the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making.
Program Student Learning Outcomes Demonstrates effective, ethical, multicultural care for a diverse group of individuals within the scope of practice of a professional counselor in the field of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders.
Demonstrate the ability to conduct professional screening, assessment, treatment planning, prevention and education, case coordination services, and documentation of those services as a Substance Abuse Counselor.
Identify and demonstrate knowledge of the basics of counseling principles, theories and skills to include crisis management.
Demonstrate knowledge of the various models and theories of behavioral addictions and substance use disorders and other problems related to addiction.

Instructor Policies This course has a online format. Students will meet online through Blackboard in students’ MyLamarPA account and through Zoom video presentations. A course calendar of assignments and dates for online and class meetings is provided.
